Why do some animals have nucleated red blood cells?

Only mammals have anucleated red blood cells, and some mammals (camels, for instance) even have nucleated red blood cells. The advantage of nucleated red blood cells is that these cells can undergo mitosis. Invertebrates that utilize hemolymph rather than blood use different pigments to bind to the oxygen.

Why do some red blood cells have a nucleus?

Explanation: When red blood cells (erythrocytes) are produced in the bone marrow, they initially do contain a nucleus. The lack of a nucleus allows it to carry more oxygen. The cell is also more flexible, improving its ability to travel through capillaries that are about half the size of the cell itself.

Why are frog red blood cells nucleated?

The presence of a nucleus in the amphibian red blood cells allows researchers easy access to large quantities of amphibian DNA. After removal of the residual plasma, purified cells can then be treated with specific enzymes and detergents to digest the cellular envelope and release DNA from its protein complex.

What animals have non-nucleated red blood cells?
