Why do revolvers have grooves on the cylinder?

In a modern revolver, cartridges are loaded into six chambers, each of which can be positioned in front of the gun’s barrel. The primer explodes, igniting the propellant, which drives the bullet down the barrel. The inside of the barrel is lined with spiraling grooves, which spin the bullet to give it stability.

Can you stop a revolver from firing?

The generally accepted ‘safe’ way to uncock a cocked revolver is to place your thumb between the hammer and the drum so that even if you messed up the uncocking action, the gun could not possibly go off. So yes, a finger can easily stop the hammer of a gun from falling and detonating the round.

Can I put silencer on revolver?

Yes, you can install one, but on almost all revolvers it would be ineffective due to gap between the cylinder and barrel which allows gas to escape. It is the escaping gas from the barrel that causes the noise which suppressors (not silencers) suppress.

How do revolvers align?

The cylinder rotates (revolves) around a central axis in the revolver’s action to sequentially align each individual chamber with the barrel bore for repeated firing. As a rule, cylinders are not designed to be detached from the firearm (except for cleaning).

Will a gun still fire if you hold the slide?

Yes, if you are gripping the slide of a semi-automatic handgun when it fires, the gun is unlikely to complete the loading cycle. The gun will jam in any of several ways. To get the gun back in action, the shooter would have to break your grip on it and then use both hands for several fine motor operations.

Can you put a silencer on any pistol?

Can you put a silencer on any gun? No. It depends on the gun. However, if your gun is threaded in the right way, you can easily put a silencer on it.

How much cylinder gap should be in a revolver?

While there have been designs created to seal off that gap in firing (most notably the Nagant M1985) most revolvers designs just accept that there needs to be a slight gap. Today a typical cylinder gap runs 6 or 7 thousandths of an inch, or 0.006 – 0.007″.

Why do you keep your fingers back when firing a revolver?

That, boys and girls, is why you keep your fingers well back away from the front of the cylinder when firing a revolver. Because the hot gas and particles which escape the cylinder gap are a lot more powerful than you probably realized before now. And that power is all stolen from the overall power of the fired cartridge.

Are there any fully suppressed revolvers?

Yes, suppressed revolvers do exist. Kinda: A Nagant M1895 with a SilencerCo Omega 9K suppressor. Note how close the cylinder is to the barrel’s forcing cone at the point of firing.

Do suppressors reduce gunshot reports?

This is because, in general, while a suppressor can help reduce (but not eliminate) the report of a gunshot by slowly dissipating the escaping gasses caught in the suppressor tube at the muzzle, the gap between a revolver’s cylinder and barrel’s forcing cone allows some gas to escape at the other end, thus defeating the purpose.
