Why do people still say Yugoslavia?

Traditional ethnic identities again became the primary ethnic designations used by most inhabitants of Yugoslavia. However, many people still declared themselves as “Yugoslavs” because they wanted to express an identification with Yugoslavia as a whole, but not specifically with any of its peoples.

During his time Yugoslavia had forth army in strength in Europe, was political power, was economically stronger than ever, people were living relaxed life and were happy in general. People wasn’t divided along nationality lines, everyone were considered as brothers and sisters.

The breakup of Yugoslavia occurred as a result of a series of political upheavals and conflicts during the early 1990s. After his death in 1980, the weakened system of federal government was left unable to cope with rising economic and political challenges.

Before that Yugoslavia was considered the best developed of all communist states, today most former Yugoslav republics are rather poor countries. It is no surprise, since these countries were the richest and the best developed republics of Yugoslavia.

The varied reasons for the country’s breakup ranged from the cultural and religious divisions between the ethnic groups making up the nation, to the memories of WWII atrocities committed by all sides, to centrifugal nationalist forces.

Despite retaining a communist one-party political regime throughout its existence (1945 – 1991), Yugoslavia was the first socialist country to attempt far-reaching economic reforms. Because of its early start and frequency of systemic changes, it was considered the most reformed socialist economy.
