Why do Odysseus and Telemachus kill several of the maids?

Odysseus commands the maids to clean up the bodies and wash away all the blood from the palace floor. The disloyal maids were hanged in a way that if one struggled, it tightened the noose on the next maid. They basically killed each other as they struggled.

Why were the maids killed in the penelopiad?
