Of course there are those who simply want to show off their chest and/or chest hair and so for personal aesthetic sensibilities keep the first two buttons open –

Some shirts have the second button placed too close to the collar to be comfortable. I have no idea why they are made that way. In that case I almost always undo the second button. At other times it’s for a more casual look. On a weekend I sometimes even undo the third button, depending on the weather.
