Why do Indian courts have so many holidays?

Every court, including apex court, must function at least six hours per day and 225 days per year, said the PIL. Even seven decades after independence, the system of long vacations for courts – a practice introduced by the British in India to allow their judges ample time to travel home and back – continues.

How many holidays do judges get in India?

High Courts generally enjoy 20 holidays in a year beside Christmas and winter holidays and summer vacations and the number of working days of High Courts generally do not fall below 222 days in a year.

The list is ordered according to seniority. There are currently 33 judges (including the Chief Justice of India) and maximum possible strength is 34. As per the Constitution of India, judges of the Supreme Court retire at age of 65.

Why do judges get holidays in the summer?

The origin of vacation benches and holidays for courts date back to colonial rule in India, when British judges, unable to bear the heat during the Indian summer, would sail back to England, only to return during the monsoon months. Now, the summer recess is seen as a welcome break for judges and necessary for their work.

Is being a judge a lot of work in India?

It is a lot of work. 1 Judge dispose 2500 cases every year in India. Compare this to USA, where 9 judges of Supreme Court altogether only dispose 81 cases in a year!!!

1) The public perception about the Indian Judges is not right. The Indian Judges have to work really hard. Those holidays are actually not holidays for them. They use that time to go for seminars, read on cases, take training and get to be aware of all the legal developments happening in the world.

The summer vacation had been introduced by the British, as they could not tolerate the heat during May. Now almost all the courts have air-conditioning facility. In view of this, the custom of observing long summer holidays had lost its relevance today.
