Bloating is usually associated with poor digestion, bad diet, and an overgrowth of unwanted bacteria in the gut, but sometimes even healthy eating habits can lead to that unwanted protruded belly.

Common causes of foul-smelling gas can be a food intolerance, high – fiber foods, certain medications and antibiotics, and constipation. More serious causes are bacteria and infections in the digestive tract or, potentially, colon cancer.

That’s because vegetables contain lots of fiber, which is fermented by bacteria in the colon (known as the intestinal microbiota), producing gas in the process. The more fiber you consume, the more gas and bloating may occur.

You can’t stop farting completely, but there are ways to reduce the amount of gas in your system.

  1. Eat more slowly and mindfully.
  2. Don’t chew gum.
  3. Cut back on gas-producing foods.
  4. Check for food intolerances with an elimination diet.
  5. Avoid soda, beer, and other carbonated beverages.
  6. Try enzyme supplements.
  7. Try probiotics.

For non-gassy fruit alternatives, try berries, cherries, grapes and cantaloupe. You may also have to skip the milk, as dairy products often are gassy foods. Cheese and ice cream can also be culprits if you are feeling bloated after those food choices.
