Why do combustion chambers have a pressure loss?

Combustion chamber pressure loss is due to two causes i) Skin friction, mixing and turbulence, and ii) The rise in temperature due to combustion. The later, the “fundamental pressure loss”, arises due to increases in temperature, which means decrease in density and increase in local velocity of flow.

What is the purpose of a combustion chamber?

A Combustion Chamber is the area within the Cylinder where the fuel/air mix is ignited. As the Piston compresses the fuel/air mix and makes contact with the Spark Plug, the mixture is combusted and pushed out of the Combustion Chamber in the form of energy.

What prevents the combustion chamber from burning?

[Figure 1-52] The air entering the combustion chamber is divided by the proper holes, louvers, and slots into two main streams—primary and secondary air. This layer of air also tends to control the flame pattern by keeping it centered in the liner, thereby preventing burning of the liner walls.

How does combustion chamber work in jet engine?

In the basic jet engine, air enters the front intake and is compressed (we will see how later). Then the air is forced into combustion chambers where fuel is sprayed into it, and the mixture of air and fuel is ignited. Gases that form expand rapidly and are exhausted through the rear of the combustion chambers.

Which factor in the design of combustion chamber to avoid detonation in SI engine is not applicable?

Q. Which factor in the design of combustion chamber to avoid knocking and detonation in SI engine is not applicable
B. exhaust valves away from end gas
C. cooling of exhaust valve
D. small bore
Answer» a. long flame travel

Does pressure change in a combustion chamber?

where p is the pressure. The numbers indicate the two stages of the cycle. Temperature and pressure in the combustion chamber both increase during the combustion process. The final value of the pressure depends on a temperature factor times the initial value of the pressure.

Does combustion increase pressure?

Temperature and pressure in the combustion chamber both increase during the combustion process. The final value of the pressure depends on a temperature factor times the initial value of the pressure. The more that we can compress the gas (the higher the p3), the greater will be the final pressure, p4.

Why is it necessary to have a combustion drain system?

Another very important requirement in the construction of combustion chambers is providing the means for draining unburned fuel. This drainage prevents gum deposits in the fuel manifold, nozzles, and combustion chambers. These deposits are caused by the residue left when the fuel evaporates.

What is a disadvantage that individual can type and can annular type combustion chambers have?

The disadvantages of annular combustion chambers are: They are expensive to make. Removal is very difficult and time consuming.

Which factor decreases the detonation in SI engine?

If the fuel air-ratio is high it will give maximum reaction time for auto-ignition therefore the rich fuel ratio will decrease the knocking tendency in the spark-ignition engine.

Why is the variable area nozzle of a jet engine closed?

The variable-area nozzle is opened wide to accommodate the resultant large gas flow. This wide diameter, however, would be inefficient when the exhaust temperatures are lower during normal flight, so the variable-area nozzle is then closed.

What happens in the combustion section between compressor and turbine?

The combustion section between compressor and turbine is where fuel is injected, mixed with air, and burnt. Why is there a pressure drop while combustion occurs and temperature suddenly increases by 1,500°C (to be compared with pressure increaseafter ignition in a reciprocating engine).

What is the combustion chamber of a jet engine?

In the combustion chamber, fuel is mixed with air to produce the bang, which is responsible for the expansion that forces the air into the turbine. Inside the typical commercial jet engine, the fuel burns in the combustion chamber at up to 2000 degrees Celsius.
