Why do British people say aluminium instead of aluminum?

British and Australian people do pronounce “aluminum” the American way. But we pronounce the name of the common metal “aluminium” because that’s how it is spelled. Note the extra “i”. Everyone outside of North America spells and pronounces it this way.
