Why did plague doctor masks have beaks?

De Lorme thought the beak shape of the mask would give the air sufficient time to be suffused by the protective herbs before it hit plague doctors’ nostrils and lungs.

Why did they wear funny masks during the plague?

The purpose of the mask was to keep away bad smells, known as miasma, which were thought to be the principal cause of the disease. Doctors believed the herbs would counter the “evil” smells of the plague and prevent them from becoming infected.

How did doctors react to the Black Death?

Most medieval cures involved bloodletting, which was an attempt to draw poison out of the body. But many people instead turned to the church for a cure, praying that God would end the great pestilence. You’ve seen them before: mysterious figures, clad from head to toe in oiled leather, wearing goggles and beaked masks. The plague doctor costume looks like a cross between a steampunk crow and the Grim Reaper, and has come to represent both the terrors of the Black Death and the foreignness of medieval medicine.

Why did plague doctors have staffs?

Staffs were used to examine bodies and even help take the pulse of infected men and women. The doctors did wear gloves, but the staff was another level of protection agains potential infection. There are even documented cases of times when the staffs were used as weapons to fend off desperate patients.

Plague doctors practiced bloodletting and other remedies such as putting frogs or leeches on the buboes to “rebalance the humors.” A plague doctor’s principal task, besides treating people with the plague, was to compile public records of plague deaths.

Plague doctor tattoos are inspired by the age of the Black Plague epidemic where doctors adorned bird masks and long, dark robes to see patients. With death being everywhere during these times, no good was to come when a plague doctor was coming your way.
