Why did Las Vegas get built in the desert?

Las Vegas was built in the desert because it is an oasis. There is water here. It used to gush up out of the ground in artesian wells. It is the only place for 100 miles around where you could build a settlement.

Why did they choose the location for Las Vegas?

Las Vegas was founded in its location because of the presence of freshwater springs. In essence, it is an oasis in the desert. As a result, railroads were built past the springs, which became a water stop for trains. A small town grew around servicing the railroads.
