Why did Jesus preach in synagogues?

Throughout the Gospels we hear stories of Jesus entering into synagogues to read scriptures, to teach, and to heal. Indeed, the Gospel of Mark records that Jesus’s first act after making the announcement of his missionary purpose3 was to go to the synagogue to teach and to heal (see Mark 1:21-27).

When did Jesus began to preach?

The Gospel of Luke (Luke 3:23) states that Jesus was “about 30 years of age” at the start of his ministry. A chronology of Jesus typically has the date of the start of his ministry September 11 26AD, others have estimated at around AD 27–29 and the end in the range AD 30–36.

What did Jesus do throughout his ministry?

His public ministry, though, seems to have focused especially around the working of miracles, casting out demons, healing people. He was known as a miracle worker.

Did Jesus teach in synagogues?

Luke 4:16–37 describes Jesus teaching regularly in the synagogue, cf. Luke 4:23, where Jesus, speaking in the Nazareth synagogue, refers to “what has been heard done” in Capernaum. John 6:22–59: contains Jesus’ Bread of Life Discourse; verse 59 confirms that Jesus taught this doctrine in the Capernaum synagogue.

When did synagogues originate?

The oldest dated evidence of a synagogue is from the 3rd century bce, but synagogues doubtless have an older history. Some scholars think that the destruction of Solomon’s Temple of Jerusalem in 586 bce gave rise to synagogues after private homes were temporarily used for public worship and religious instruction.

What was the purpose of the synagogue?

A synagogue is a space for worship and prayer. Jews believe it is good to pray together, but there must be a minimum of ten people present for certain prayers to be said. This is called a minyan . The synagogue is an important centre for Jewish communities where meetings take place and social gatherings happen.
