Why China is not part of SAARC?

Firstly, the perception that China is not a South Asian country as it doesn’t share a history and culture with the people of South Asia. China has borders with five of the eight South Asian countries and is located in the proximity of Bangladesh, yet, China is not a mainstream South Asian country.

China became an observer state in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in 2005, and since then, it has been pushing to be a full member of the regional organization. China has also contributed $300,000 to the SAARC Development Fund.
