Why a balloon filled with helium does not rise in air indefinitely but halts after a certain height?

When a balloon is filled with helium, there is an inner pressure because of which the balloon expands more and more as it goes higher. But as the balloon goes higher, the atmospheric pressure also decreases. This is why the balloon ultimately stops after reaching a certain height.

Why does balloon does not rise indefinitely?

Since the density of air decreases with height therefore the balloon halts at a particular. height where the density of air is such that the weight of air displaced is just equal to the weight of helium gas and the balloon. Hence the net force acting on the balloon is zero and the balloon stops rising.

Will a helium filled balloon rise indefinitely in the air?

A balloon filled with helium does not rise in air indefinitely but halts after a certain height. due to it, the weight of air decrease at greater height. The balloon halts at such a height where the weight of the air displaced just equal to the weight of helium gas and the balloon.

What happens when we left gas filled balloon in air?

Gas particles exert pressure on the walls of the container in which the gas is filled. For example, when a balloon is inflated, the air inside it expands, thereby exerting pressure on the balloon walls. As a result, the size of the balloon increases.

Why does a balloon filled with carbon dioxide sink in air whereas a balloon filled with helium rises in air?

Carbon dioxide is denser than nitrogen and oxygen (i.e. air), so the balloon filled with carbon dioxide is heavier and sinks in the air faster than the balloon filled with normal air.

Why do balloons rise in air?

Balloons float because they are filled with helium! Balloons can be filled with different types of gas. The air we breathe is made up of lots of different gasses. The helium wants to float up, up, and away from the surface of the Earth — so your helium-filled balloon wants to float up, up and away too!
