Who got Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake?

The ninth episode of the season 2 is titled “The Lady of the Lake”, wherein a sorceress named Freya, played by Laura Donnelly, dies and vows to repay Merlin for his kindness to her. In the season 3 finale, Freya, now a water spirit, gives Excalibur to Merlin so that he can give it to Prince Arthur Pendragon.

The Lady of the Lake, an enchantress also known as Viviane or Nimuë, appears in many of the tales of King Arthur. According to legend, she lived in a castle beneath a lake surrounding the mystical island of Avalon. She raised Lancelot and gave Arthur the magical sword Excalibur, which he treasured.

Arthur meets the Lady of the Lake and gets the sword Excalibur.

If the real Excalibur did come from the stone, later stories of the magic sword breaking seem incompatible. If the sword from the stone breaking is thought true, the replacement from the lake is needed. Caliburn was forged in Avallon but how it came to Arthur’s hand is not stated.
