Where is moonga silk produced?

Assam
Assam is known for producing all the four types of silk. Sericulture has been practised in the state from time immemorial, and is proud of traditionally producing Muga & Eri silks. Muga culture is endemic to erstwhile Assam and is the largest producer of the famous golden Muga silk in the world.

Why is Muga silk called?

Muga silk, which is mainly produced by the Garo community of Assam, is obtained from semi-domesticated multivoltine silkworm, Antheraea Assamensis. These silkworms feed on the leaves of Som and Soalu plants and the silk produced from them is known for its glossy texture and durability.

Which is known as Assamese silk?

An exclusive traditional dress, Mekhela Chadar woven with silk is indigenous to Brahmaputra Valley in Assam. Popularly known as Assam silk it denotes the three major types of indigenous wild silks produced in Assam—Golden Muga, White Paat and warm Eri Silk.

Where is tussar silk found in India?

India is the second-largest producer of tussar silk, and the exclusive producer of Indian tussar (also known as tropical tussar), which is largely tended to by tribals. Much of it is produced in Bhagalpur (where it is called Bhagalpur silk), Bihar, and Malda district of West Bengal.

What is ghisa silk?

Ghisa produced in eastern states of India like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar , Assam the yarns of Ghicha silk are obtained from the cocoons of tussar silk that cannot have the silk yarns reeled naturally and hence these cocoons are ruptured and the silk is reeled manually.

Which silk is pride of Assam?

Muga Silk
Muga Silk is the pride of Assam and is a nature’s gift to the state. It is the only state in the country which produces Muga silk by rearing “Antheraea assamensis” or Muga worm (in Assamese language it is muga polu).
