When WhatsApp pay will be available in India?

WhatsApp payments service was launched in November 2020 in India. It was rolled out for more users in June 2021. Now, the payments service has been made available on the WhatsApp mobile app for all users in India. Users will see the payment notification above the list of chats in the mobile app.

Why WhatsApp pay failed in India?

After facing regulatory roadblocks and data compliance issues with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for more than two years, WhatsApp finally went live with the UPI payment service in India in November last year, after receiving a nod from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

According to Deepak Abbot, co-founder of fintech company Indiagold, the staggered and slow growth of WhatsApp’s India payment service could be on account of a competitive marketplace and the platform itself being uncertain of its goals for the India market.

WhatsApp Pay was launched in February 2018 in India as part of a trial run. Payments through WhatsApp were introduced to a million users under a partnership with ICICI Bank. On February 7, 2020, the messaging app received NPCI’s approval to roll out its digital payment service in a phased manner.
