When were swords no longer used in battle?

During the American Revolution and through the Civil War, swords remained a common sight on the battlefield. In fact, it wasn’t until after World War I that they stopped being issued to American troops, with the Patton cavalry saber the last sword issued to U.S. military personnel in 1918.

A knights armor was developed so well that a shield was of little practical use. Because a shield wasn’t needed, combatants now had an extra hand, and swords were being made for two hand use. This was very effective because it made the swords heavier and longer, meaning they could be swung effectively from a horse.

Are swords still used today?

Swords appeared again, and it became common to be trained in the ways of swords and guns. Swords were still widely used up until WW1, where it arguable made its last debut in a large scale battle.

This was in the middle to the late medieval period and people had to adapt to a new style of warfare. During this period, knights were the strongest war units, and their equipment was doing a fantastic job at defending attacks.
