When was intersectionality coined?

1989
Legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality” in 1989 to describe how systems of oppression overlap to create distinct experiences for people with multiple identity categories.

What is intersectionality example?

Intersectionality identifies multiple factors of advantage and disadvantage. Examples of these factors include gender, caste, sex, race, class, sexuality, religion, disability, physical appearance, and height. These intersecting and overlapping social identities may be both empowering and oppressing.

What is structural intersectionality?

Structural intersectionality refers to how the experiences of people within a particular identity category are qualitatively different from each other depending on their other intersecting identities (Cole, 2008; Crenshaw, 1991).

What is workplace intersectionality?

In a nutshell, intersectionality is the idea that people have more than one identity. And those identities are inherently combined. Your employees with disabilities also have many other identities that impact their workplace experience. A worker might have hearing loss and be a recent immigrant, for example.

What is intersection theory?

In other words, intersectional theory asserts that people are often disadvantaged by multiple sources of oppression: their race, class, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and other identity markers. Black women, faced with multiple forms of oppression, only make $0.64.

What are the three main factors involved in intersectionality?

These factors include: race, indigeneity, socioeconomic status, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, (dis)ability, spirituality, immigration/refugee status, language, and education. One of the ideas of intersectionality is for individuals, groups and communities to self-identify.

How do you think about promoting diversity in police recruitment?

So How Can Police Departments Diversify?

  1. Reconsider physical and written tests that may impact female and non-white applicants.
  2. Allow applicants with prior arrests to apply for exemptions.
  3. Engage stakeholders to help create diversity reflective of the community.
  4. Use proactive and targeted community outreach efforts.

How do you ensure diversity in your recruiting and hiring practices?

Increasing diversity in sourcing

  1. Audit your job ads.
  2. Target sources where diverse candidates congregate.
  3. Encourage your diverse employees to refer their connections.
  4. Offer internships to targeted groups.
  5. Develop an employer brand that showcases your diversity.
  6. Create company policies that appeal to diverse candidates.

Why intersectionality is important in the workplace?

Intersectionality considers different systems of oppression, and specifically how they overlap and are compounded. This is increasingly important because more companies are giving attention to DEI than ever, but often with a narrow, single-minded strategy: “We’re focusing on women first.”

What is the difference between intersection and junction?

Junction – a point where two or more things are joined. Intersection – a point at which two or more things intersect, especially a road junction.

What is meant by intersection in statistics?

The intersection of two or more sets is the set of elements that are common to each of the sets. An element is in the intersection if it belongs to all of the sets. The symbol for intersection is ∩ , and is associated with the word “and”, because A∩B A ∩ B is the set of elements that are in A and B simultaneously.
