What will be the neutral current in 3 phase unbalanced circuit?

The neutral current in a three-phase, four-wire wye system represents the imbalance of the three-phase conductors, also known as the “hot” conductors. If the three hot conductors are equal, as in the case of supplying a three-phase motor, there is no imbalance and the neutral current is zero.

Why do unbalanced loads cause current flow in a neutral wire?

In an unbalanced 3 phase electrical load, the line currents are different, which causes the neutral current to flow from the star point of the load to the supply star point. So, this current takes the path back to the supply through the lines.

How does the neutral carry current?

The neutral carries current if the loads on each phase are not identical. In some jurisdictions, the neutral is allowed to be reduced in size if no unbalanced current flow is expected. If the neutral is smaller than the phase conductors, it can be overloaded if a large unbalanced load occurs.

How much current is in a neutral wire?

A neutral wire is, strictly speaking, only a reference wire to measure the voltage of a live wire, but, if it is a shared wire with three or four live wire that are phased so as to add up to zero voltage , then the neutral wire will have no current.

Does current pass through neutral wire?

yes. without a neutral a single phase is not complete. a neutral completes a single phase circuit. For an electric current to flow through, the current needs a power source and a return path.

How does a neutral circuit work?

Neutral wire carries the circuit back to the original power source. More specifically, neutral wire brings the circuit to a ground or busbar usually connected at the electrical panel. This gives currents circulation through your electrical system, which allows electricity to be fully utilized.

Why is there no neutral wire in a 3 phase circuit?

In single-phase, loads the neutral wire provides the return path for the current, and in balanced 3 phase loads, because they satisfy the above criteria, the currents enter and return through lines creating 0A of out of balance current. So, there is no need for a neutral wire.

What would happen if a neutral wire is not balanced?

The difference in load will cause an out of balance current to flow through neutral wire. The impedance of three conductors will be the same and unequal current flowing through them will give rise to unequal voltage drops with the possibility of the voltages at the loads being unbalanced.

Why neutral current is not present in single phase load?

The three phase loads are balanced and do not contribute to neutral current therefore the neutral conductor can be removed. But balance of load on every phase is difficult in the case of single phase loads. Due to this imbalance some neutral current always flows.

What happens when a load is unbalanced on a 4 wire system?

UNBALANCED FOUR-WIRE, WYE-CONNECTED LOAD On a four-wire system the neutral conductor will carry a current when the load is unbalanced The voltage across each of the load impedances remains fixed with the same magnitude as the line to neutral voltage. The line currents are unequal and do not have a 120° phase difference.
