What was Njord known for?

The Norse god of wind and waters, Njord was the patron of sailors and fishermen; he also brought wealth to the just and deserving. As patriarch of the Vanir deities, Njord led his tribe against the Aesir gods during the Aesir-Vanir War. Njord was a popular god among the Norse, and seafarers in particular.

In Norse mythology, Njörðr (Old Norse: Njǫrðr [ˈnjɔrðz̠]) is a god among the Vanir. Njörðr, father of the deities Freyr and Freyja by his unnamed sister, was in an ill-fated marriage with the goddess Skaði, lives in Nóatún and is associated with the sea, seafaring, wind, fishing, wealth, and crop fertility.

The gods offered Skadi compensation instead of revenge – she was invited to choose a husband from among the gods, but only by looking at their feet. The feet instead belonged to the sea god Njord. Skadi’s own condition for not seeking revenge was that the gods should make her laugh.

Did Skadi survive Ragnarok?

Despite everything, Skadi maintains her ties with the Gods of Asgard as their definite ally, even becoming mother of many children with Odin at one point according to some sources. Her fate in the conclusion of Ragnarök remained a mystery, only that it could be inferred that she was among surviving Gods of Asgard.

In Asgard, Njord lived in a great palace called Noatun (which means “enclosure of ships”), and by a strange circumstance became the husband of a giantess named Skadi. Skadi had come to Asgard to avenge the death of her father, Thiassi, who had been killed by the gods after kidnapping the goddess Idunn.

Who is Njord’s enemy?

In his role as a sea God, Njord helps and protect seafarers. His major enemy is the giant Aegir, who brings destruction at sea. Aegir was married to his sister Ran, with whom he had nine daughters: the spirits of the waves.
