What was Gyarados original type?

Gyarados (Japanese: ギャラドス Gyarados) is a dual-type Water/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It evolves from Magikarp starting at level 20.

Why is Gyarados flying and not dragon?

Gyarados is a flying type because in Gen 1, the only Dragon-type move did fixed damage, so a Water/Dragon type would have no weaknesses. Because the Flying type allows for a x4 weakness to Electric, which keeps Gyarados in check.

Why does Magikarp evolve into a dragon?
