The hydrogen-oxygen reaction generates tremendous heat, causing the water vapor to expand and exit the engine nozzles at speeds of 10,000 miles per hour! All that fast-moving steam creates the thrust that propels the rocket from Earth.

What is the chemical reaction for rocket fuel?

Combustion is a fast, exothermic chemical reaction between a fuel (for example, jet fuel) and an oxidizer (such as oxygen) in which the fuel burns and heat is produced. Usually the fuel is an organic compound (containing hydrogen and carbon, and sometimes metal and/or other components).

Launching a rocket relies on Newton’s Third Law of Motion. A rocket engine produces thrust through action and reaction. The engine produces hot exhaust gases which flow out of the back of the engine. In reaction, a thrusting force is produced in the opposite reaction.

But what about rocket fuel? That application comes about due to the other important property of hydrazine: it burns very exothermically in the presence of oxygen (or oxygen-containing compounds) generating a lot of hot gases, which can be used to produce the exhaust thrust for a rocket.

Why does a Bottle Rocket not produce much thrust?

Because the weight flow of air is so small, this type of rocket engine does not produce much thrust. A bottle rocket uses water as the working fluid and pressurized air to accelerate the working fluid. Because water is much heavier than air, bottle rockets generate more thrust than stomp rockets.

How does a water rocket work?

The flight of a water rocket is similar to the flight of a compressed air rocket with one important exception. The mass of the bottle rocket varies during the flight because of the exhausting water plume. There are equations which have been developed for full scale rockets that account for this loss of mass.

What is a rocket made out of?

Usually the rocket is made from a 2-liter soda pop bottle. Before launch, the bottle is filled with some amount of water, which acts as the “propellant” for the launch. Since water is about 100 times heavier than air, the expelled water produces more thrust than compressed air alone.

In the same way, a rocket needs to push against something. It is pushing against the gases inside it. As these gases are pushed out in one direction, there is a reaction force that pushes the rocket in the other direction. This reaction force is called thrust .
