What type of radiation does samarium-153 emit?

Samarium-153 is a beta-emitter with a short half-life (46.7 h), which also emits gamma-photons suitable for imaging at 103 keV.

What is samarium used for cancer?

A radioactive substance used to treat bone cancer and other cancers that have spread to the bone. Samarium Sm 153 is a radioactive form of the element samarium. It collects in bone, where it releases radiation that may kill cancer cells.

How does SM 153 Decay?

Samarium-153 decays by emitting both beta minus particles and gamma photons with a characteristic gamma peak of 103.2 KeV; it has a physical half-life time of 1.93 days. The carrier molecule used is the ethylene diamine tetramethylene phosphonate acid (EDTMP), a chelator osteotropic tetraphosphonate.

How is Sm 153 produced?

Samarium-153 was produced by neutron activation of raw materials of Samarium-152 trioxide. Samarium-153 produces beta particles that work to reduce bone pain due to cancer and gamma rays that act as imaging agents and allow patients to perform imaging through gamma cameras.

Why is sm153 used?

Samarium Sm 153 lexidronam injection is used to help relieve bone pain that may occur with certain kinds of cancer. The radioactive samarium is taken up in the bone cancer area and gives off radiation that helps provide relief from pain.

What is the half-life of samarium 147?

List of isotopes

Nuclide Z Half-life
Excitation energy
147Sm 62 1.06(2)×1011 y
148Sm 62 7(3)×1015 y
149Sm 62 Observationally Stable

What are samarium uses?

Samarium is used to dope calcium chloride crystals for use in optical lasers. It is also used in infrared absorbing glass and as a neutron absorber in nuclear reactors. Samarium oxide finds specialised use in glass and ceramics.

Is samarium used to treat lung cancer?

Pain begins to improve in the first week for most people and the effects can last several months. It is commonly used in lung cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and osteosarcoma.

What makes samarium special?

Samarium is a silvery-white metal belonging to the lanthanide group of the periodic table. It is relatively stable at room temperature in dry air, but it ignites when heated above 150 C and forms an oxide coating in moist air. Like europium samarium has a relatively stable oxidation state (II).

What does samarium decay into?

The radioactive decay of samarium of mass 147 (147Sm) to neodymium of mass 143 (143Nd) has been shown to be capable of providing useful isochron ages for certain geologic materials.
