What rashes can be mistaken for herpes?

Herpes symptoms can be mistaken for many other things, including:

  • A different STI which causes visible lesions, such as Syphilis or genital warts (HPV)
  • Irritation caused by shaving.
  • Ingrown hairs.
  • Bacterial vaginosis (BV)
  • Pimples.
  • Yeast infections.
  • Haemorrhoids.
  • Bug bites.

Is dermatitis related to herpes?

Causes of eczema herpeticum An eczema herpeticum happens when the herpes virus infects large areas of the skin. People with atopic dermatitis are more susceptible to skin infection in general, including eczema herpeticum. Eczema herpeticum can also appear in people who have contact dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis.

Can cold sores be mistaken for something else?

Angular cheilitis may mimic cold sores, but there are specific signs you can look for to tell them apart. Cold sores typically begin as an itchy or painful area that turns into one or a group of small, painful blisters. Over time, they may weep, scab over, and finally heal.

Sores from angular cheilitis are less common than cold sores, but they often look similar. Angular cheilitis causes inflammation, redness, and irritation at the corners of the mouth. While cold sores are caused by a virus, angular cheilitis can be caused by a number of different things, including fungal infection.

Can cold sores cause dermatitis?

Herpes simplex virus, the virus that causes cold sores or genital herpes, can infect the skin of people with eczema and cause a widespread rash over the face and neck; this is called eczema herpeticum (also known as Kaposi varicelliform eruption). This rash can sometimes spread over broad areas of skin around the body.

What about a cold sore that isn’t on your lip? They aren’t as common, but they can pop up anywhere on your face, like your cheek, chin, or nose. Most people’s cold sores reappear in the same area each time.

Two other viruses that can cause problems for eczema patients are Molloscum contagiosum and Vaccinia. This last virus may cause severe skin reactions (eczema vaccinatum) in individuals with active, but even past histories of, atopic dermatitis after immunization against smallpox with vaccinia.
