What part of your identity can you not change?

Firstly, our biometric information, except our DNA, is not secret. Secondly, biometric data is practically impossible to change. How do we get a new set of fingerprints?

The quick answer is that no, you can’t completely erase your identity in this day and age — unless the government does it for you. Legally changing your name isn’t too difficult. Legally changing your Social Security number (SSN) is possible as well, but only under certain circumstances.

There are different reasons to why our identities change over time. We are exposed to different things everyday and that can effect our ways of thinking. Another thing that effects our identity over time, is our race and what we believe in.

People who can easily describe these aspects of their identity typically have a fairly strong sense of who they are.

Your identity is automatically placed upon you from birth. It is up to you to believe, accept and shape it to your true you. As we grow older our identity shapeshifts it acquires new meaning through our achievements, our appearance, our likes and dislikes, our sexuality, who we associate with.

Our personal identity is how we perceive ourselves, but our social identity is how others perceive us. People recognize us by our characteristics within our town, school, career or another community context. Some social identities might be defined by our marital, financial, occupational, religious or behavioral status.

Identity change describes the intentional changes to an identity document or digital identity. A second party, who wishes to use the identity, may initiate the change. A third party may initiate an identity change. In some instances, multiple parties cooperate to change an identity.

Yes, you’re not the same person you were years ago, but at the end of the day (or any day for that matter), your identity remains. They say the only constant in life is change, but this study is comforting in the sense that it has found at least one other constant: you.

We can take control over what our identities will become instead of accepting what they are. Identity is something that is naturally self-validating. We often think back on moments in our lives that prove to ourselves that we are a certain way.

Are we born with our identity or do we create it?

Identity is not just what you know; it is also how you know. People are not born with an identity. Rather, identity is something that evolves over time. Young children have simple identities and see things in an overly simple, generally self-serving manner.
