What must be taken into consideration when working with the RAM?

There’s really just two components that determine the performance of a given memory kit: frequency and latency. RAM frequency is similar to a CPUs frequency. The faster a memory kit’s frequency is, the faster the memory can process data.

What affects the performance of RAM?

The speed of your processor and the bus speed of the computer motherboard are the limiting factors on the speed of RAM installed in your computer. RAM upgrades are limited by the capability of the computer and the availability of expansion slots for adding RAM.

How does RAM increase performance?

Generally, the faster the RAM, the faster the processing speed. With faster RAM, you increase the speed at which memory transfers information to other components. Meaning, your fast processor now has an equally fast way of talking to the other components, making your computer much more efficient.

What are the effects of mixing RAM modules with different speed ratings?

If you do mix speeds, the modules will all run at the speed of your slowest modules. For example, for a DDR2 667MHz system you could add 800MHz modules, they will run at the 667 speed. You cannot mix DDR, DDR2, DDR3 in a system as each technology requires a different type of socket.

What are the factors of RAM?

There are two main RAM form factors – DIMM and SO-DIMM. The former is for desktops, whereas the latter is for laptops. They’re not cross-compatible, so don’t accidentally purchase SO-DIMM RAM for your desktop computer upgrade.

What is important in RAM?

Why is computer memory (RAM) important? Computer random access memory (RAM) is one of the most important components in determining your system’s performance. It stores the information your computer is actively using so that it can be accessed quickly. The more programs your system is running, the more you’ll need.

Can you mix and match different RAM speeds?

While you can technically mix speeds, there is one important thing to note: your DRAM would all run at the speed of the slowest module. For example, if you have a DDR3 1333MHz system and install a second module at 1600MHz, they would both run at the 1333MHz speed.

Can different RAM channels run at different speeds?

No, it is imposible. Both RAM sticks should have the same size and the same bus speed in dual channel mode. Computers may switch to single channel mode if two RAM stisks are not same size. The motherboard may proper the bus speed of both of RAM sticks to a acceptable bus speed if both RAM stick is not same bus speed.

What do RAM specs mean?

random access memory
RAM Defined. RAM (random access memory) is memory in which all areas can be written to or read from within the same amount of time. The operating system, application programs and data in current use are kept in RAM, specifically in the chip-on-card main memory, for quick access by the computer’s processor.

Is it possible to mix memory modules?

Mixing memory modules of different sizes and capacities is generally a bad idea. The memory controller would have to default to the speed of the lesser module and if its a dual channel setup, it may not work at all – BSOD. You would be better served, IMHO by the matched pair.

Can I use more than one memory module form factor?

Although a few systems can use more than one memory module form factor, in most cases if you want to change to a faster type of memory module, such as from 184-pin DIMM (used by DDR SDRAM) to 240-pin DIMM (such as DDR2 or DDR3 SDRAM), you need to upgrade the motherboard first.

How does Ram affect the performance of a computer?

With more RAM on the computer, the less the CPU has to read data from the external or secondary memory (storage device), allowing the computer to run faster. RAM is fast but it is volatile, which means it will not retain data if there is no power.

How many types of memory are there in a memory module?

Memory chip type used on the module (SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, and so on) —Today, a particular memory module type uses only one type of memory. However, older memory module types such as early 168-pin DIMMs were available with different types of memory chips.
