What level is sea level?

Sea level is the base level for measuring elevation and depth on Earth. Because the ocean is one continuous body of water, its surface tends to seek the same level throughout the world. However, winds, currents, river discharges, and variations in gravity and temperature prevent the sea surface from being truly level.

Which part of the ocean is flat?

abyssal plain
The abyssal plain is the flat area of the ocean floor. It is covered with sand, mud, and plant and animal remains. Located on this flat plain are undersea mountains called seamounts that are formed by erupting volcanoes.

Is the bottom of the sea flat?

Why does the ocean floor look flat?

It is essentially flat because the rugged topography of the underlying basaltic crust is draped in sediment that can be up to five km (three mi) thick. The abyssal plains cover 25\% of the Earth’s surface. Three to six km deeper than the adjacent ocean floor, these are the deepest places on the Earth’s surface.

What is the difference between sea level and ground level?

AGL, or above ground level, is the distance that an object is above the ground below it. For example, if you are standing on the roof of a building that is 100 feet tall, you are at 100 feet AGL. MSL, or mean sea level, refers to the distance an object is above sea level.

What are the features of ocean basins?

Deep-Ocean Basins. Deep-ocean basins cover the greatest portion of the Earth’s surface. Geographic features associated with deep-ocean basins include trenches, abyssal plains, ocean ridges and rises, and submarine mountainous regions.

What are ocean floor features?

Features of the ocean floor include the continental shelf and slope, abyssal plain, trenches, seamounts, and the mid-ocean ridge. The ocean floor is rich in resources.
