What is the Yellow Book Dorian GREY?

It is, in fact, a ‘yellow book’ which corrupts Dorian Gray in Oscar Wilde’s novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray; this generally thought to be Joris-Karl Huysmans’s À rebours (1884). Indeed, when Wilde was arrested in 1895, there were rumours he had been carrying a yellow-bound book.

Is The Picture of Dorian Gray a classic?

“The Picture of Dorian Gray” has become one of my favorite classic novels that I have ever read. The book, written by Oscar Wilde, includes skillful writing, an interesting storyline and numerous questionable social ideals that induce deep thought concerning our own notions of society.

Is Dorian Gray worth reading?

It’s a wonderful novel about the negative aspects of narcissism and hedonism. Eventually, most young, urban men will end up going through a ‘Dorian Gray’ phase in life. Where they are careless and excessive in every which way. It is also a really good read, for the literature lovers too.

Why did Wilde write the picture of Dorian Gray?

Wilde made clear that he wished to show not only the thrills and pleasures of a ruthlessly aesthetic life but also its limits and dangers. Oscar Wilde was not a man who lived in fear, but early reviews of “The Picture of Dorian Gray” must have given him pause.

What does James Vane represent?

He’s kind of a super-masculine man in a world full of more ambiguous males; a sailor, traveler, and all around tough guy, he seems to represent a world of brawn over brains that Wilde’s not terribly interested in.

What bad things did Dorian Gray do?

As the novel progresses, Gray becomes increasingly immoral, indulging in all manner of vices, eventually including the murder of the portrait-painter. Gray only ends the split by plunging a knife into the painting and killing himself.

Is Dorian Gray a difficult read?

The novel is comprised of 10 chapters that consist of 2, 3 or 4 pages each. In short, you will not have any difficulty reading ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ if ever you’re someone who despises mammoth books. As a matter of fact, I finished it in 3 days, albeit trying my best not to read it so quickly!

What version of Dorian Gray should I read?

If you’ve never read “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” I’d still suggest you start with the 1891 version, widely available. But after this enthralling novel has left you shaken and disturbed, look for deeper understanding in Nicholas Frankel’s superb annotated edition.
