What is the purpose of recirculation line in pumps?

Automatic recirculation valves, sometimes referred to as pump protection valves or minimum flow valves are installed on the outlet of a centrifugal pump discharge line. Their purpose is to prevent the pump from overheating by ensuring that there is a minimum flow through the pump at all times.

What is recirculation in centrifugal pump?

Recirculation in centrifugal pumps is a flow reversal at the inlet or at the discharge tips of the impeller vanes. Through analysis and tests, it is now possible to determine the flow patterns that must exist to produce the observed results.

What is of minimum recirculation flow for centrifugal pump?

If you need to operate a centrifugal pump back on the curve, the minimum suggested point is at 10\% of BEP (Best Efficiency Point). For example, a 620 pump with a full impeller has a BEP of 44\% at 24 GPM. Therefore, the minimum flow should be limited to 10\% of 24 or 2.4 GPM.

What is the meaning of recirculation?

Definition of recirculation : the act or process of circulating again or causing something to circulate again … which help convert the steam generated within the reactor back into water for recirculation in the closed loop system.—

What is affinity law in pumps?

The affinity laws express the mathematical relationships between the several variables involved in pump performance. They are used to predict what effect speed or impeller diameter changes have on centrifugal pump performance. One can trim an existing impeller and the affinity laws will apply to the new conditions.

How can you prevent damage from internal suction recirculation?

Other than avoiding the low flow suction recirculation zone all together, or selecting only low suction energy pumps, the normal first fix for a suction recirculation problem is to install external by-pass lines to bring the net flow rate above the start of suction recirculation.

What is a pump Cutwater?

The area just above the discharge, where the volute begins, (about 7 o’clock) is known as the cutwater. Its purpose is to guide water into the discharge and reduce recirculation back into the volute.

Do centrifugal pumps increase velocity?

Centrifugal pumps increase the pressure of the liquid by using rotating blades to increase the velocity of a liquid and then reduce the velocity of the liquid in the volute. When the ball (liquid molecule) is kicked, the leg (vane) increases its velocity.

Who determines the minimum flow rate of the pump?

The minimum flow rate for the AOR is typically determined by the “start of suction recirculation” for high and very high suction energy pumps, especially those with low NPSH margins. The start of suction recirculation generally ranges from 40 to 100 percent of the BEP flow (see Fig. 2).

What is recirculation in centrifugal pumps?

Recirculation in centrifugal pumps is a flow reversal at the inlet or at the discharge tips of the impeller vanes. Through analysis and tests, it is now possible to determine the flow patterns that must exist to produce the observed results.

What happens if you recirculate a water pump?

Flow recirculation results. Flow recirculation can damage the impeller due to cavitation caused by vaporization in the low-pressure regions that recirculation creates. Flow recirculation also stresses pump components with unbalanced forces and vibration.

How to reduce the consequences of flow recirculation?

Both mechanical and process changes can reduce the consequences of flow recirculation. Mechanical solutions focus on the pump. For instance, impeller-volute-geometry matching and vane-angle, leading-edge and inlet-eye modifications, as well as pump speed changes all can improve pump flexibility.

Can a centrifugal pump operate at low flow regions?

Nevertheless, pumps frequently operate a significant part of their lives at conditions others than BEP. Several problems could appear when a centrifugal pump has been functioning at low flow regions during a long time, causing a negative impact on pump performance and life, or even a pump failure if the pump operates below the minimum safe flow.
