What is the process of refining petroleum called?

The most widely used conversion method is called cracking because it uses heat, pressure, catalysts, and sometimes hydrogen to crack heavy hydrocarbon molecules into lighter ones.

What is feedstock in oil and gas?

Feedstock is any hydrocarbon input to a process unit. This could be crude oil or any intermediate refining stream. When the term feedstock is used for the feed to the entire refinery, it typically means non-crude feedstocks such as VGO and blendstocks.

What types of refineries are there?

There are four types of refineries – topping, hydro-skimming, conversion, and deep conversion refineries. Depending on the market a refiner is aiming at, each refinery has its unique design to ensure their production conforms to their host country’s set standards.

What is natural gas distillate?

Distillate fuel oil having sulfur content greater than 500 ppm. Hydrocarbon. An organic chemical compound of hydrogen and carbon in the gaseous, liquid, or solid phase. The molecular structure of hydrocarbon compounds varies from the simplest (methane, a constituent of natural gas) to the very heavy and very complex.

What are the main refining processes?

Three major types of operation are performed to refine the oil into finished products: separation, conversion and treating.

How does the refining process work?

Refining turns crude oil into usable products. The crude petroleum is heated and the hot gases are passed into the bottom of a distillation column. The liquids are then drawn off the distilling column at specific heights to obtain fuels like gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.

What is fractional distillation crude oil?

Fractional distillation separates a mixture into a number of different parts, called fractions. Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons . The crude oil is evaporated and its vapours condense at different temperatures in the fractionating column.

What are the various feedstock used in petroleum refineries?

As is apparent from Table 1, the major feedstock used in Indian petrochemical units is naphtha and natural gas (propane and butane). The major intermediate products produced in the country are ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene and xylene.

What is a metal refining facility called?

A refinery is a production facility composed of a group of chemical engineering unit processes and unit operations refining certain materials or converting raw material into products of value.

What is distillation petroleum?

A crude oil distillation process is the process of heating crude oil and passing the vapor through a vessel to separate out different compounds, known as fractions. In the crude oil distillation process, the crude oil is heated to 400°C and separated into fractions on 30-50 fraction trays in a distillation column.

What is petroleum distillate?

Petroleum Distillates are dark yellow to brown or green-black liquids with a mild gasoline or kerosene-like odor. They are a complex blend of Hydrocarbons used in making petroleum products.

How are natural gas liquids produced?

Hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGLs) are produced when raw natural gas is processed at natural gas processing plants and when crude oil is refined into petroleum products. Most of the HGLs produced in the United States are separated from natural gas at natural gas processing plants.
