Does Echo Show have to be plugged in?
Yes. This is true for the vast majority of Amazon’s Echo devices, including: Echo Show, Echo Plug, Echo Studio, and Echo Flex. Echo Dot needs to be plugged into the wall at all times. Without power, you won’t be able to summon Alexa through voice commands.

Why does echo show have a micro USB?
Amazon says that it is for a microUSB to wired Ethernet adapter for situations where wifi isn’t available or not feasible. It is probably there to allow programming the device when something has gone wrong with the ROM or when the initial programming is installed.

The only device that has a rechargeable battery is the Echo Tap. All other Echo devices such as: Echo (Gen 1 & 2), Echo Plus, Echo Dot, Echo Show and Echo Spot are corded and require they be plugged into an outlet. Another alternative is the Amazon Tap (note the lack of “Echo” in the product name).
Is micro USB bad?
The problem is that the Micro USB port is pretty badly designed. It’s pretty easy to bend it out of true just by plugging the cable in wrong, or accidentally putting pressure on the plug. Possibly the asymmetrical nature of the plug, in which it’s easy to bend in one direction, has to do with the issue.
