What is the difference between Nema 5 and NEMA 6?

A 5 represents a voltage rating of 125 VAC, while a 6 identifies a rating of 250 VAC. The rating given is the highest voltage allowed for use with the device by the standard. The third identifier is a number and identifies the amperage rating of the device. In the case of a NEMA 5-15, the amperage rating is 15 amps.

Can I use a 20 amp outlet on a 20 amp circuit?

As long as the wire connecting the two devices has a rating meeting or exceeding 20 amps, (12 awg or larger) it is acceptable to install a 20 amp receptacle on a 20 amp circuit breaker.

ten outlets
The answer to the question how many outlets on a 20 amp circuit is ten outlets. Always comply with the 80\% circuit and breaker load rule, allowing a maximum load of 1.5 amps per receptacle. Remember that your circuit, wire sizes, and outlets must be compatible to avoid overheating and electrical hazards.

Can you put a 20A outlet on a 20A circuit?

The NEC requires that a 20A receptacle is installed on a 20A branch circuit when there is only one receptacle connected to that circuit. That’s why, even though most commercial buildings are required to have 20A branch circuits the receptacles are often 15 amp devices.

What is the difference between NEMA 6 20P and 6-20R?

The NEMA 6-20P is a 3 Wire grounded plug featuring two blades and a ground pin, rated up to 250V AC and 20A. The 6-20P has a horizontal and vertical blade to prevent attachment to lower ampere rated receptacles. However, the 6-20R (receptacle) offers a “T” slot allowing connection of both a 6-20P and a 6-15P.

Can you plug a 6 15P into a 6-20R?

The cross-compatible NEMA 6-20R can accept a 6-15 or 6-20 plug, for currents of 15 amperes or 20A, respectively. This is exactly how a NEMA 5-20R has a T-shaped slot, for both 5-15P and 5-20P. NEMA 6 runs at 240 volts, however, not 120V.

Can I put a 15a GFCI outlet on a 20a circuit?

4 Answers. Yes you can. Having the GFCI marked 20 Amp is so the one model can be used for either type of circuit. If you have a 20 Amp Circuit then there is no problem with using 15 Amp receptacles on the same run.
