What is the difference between melkor and Morgoth?

For the character there is no difference, it’s just two names for the same character. Melkor is his original name. Morgoth is the name Feanor gave him after he stole the Silmarils.

How did Morgoth lose the silmarils?

One of the Silmarils was recovered by Beren and Lúthien through great peril and loss, when Lúthien sent Morgoth to sleep with her singing and Beren cut it from his crown.

Why did Melkor want the Silmarils?
