What is the difference between acting and substantive?

The acting rank duration does not affect that person’s seniority – to explain, the period for which the person has held the acting rank is not counted in his/her seniority for that (acting) rank, whether paid or unpaid, whereas a substantive rank person gets seniority in that rank from the date of putting it on.

Retired officers may wear uniform on suitable occasions but it must be of current pattern and they should wear a small gilt R under their badges of rank (I’ve never seen anyone do so!) To pick up chicks or for recruiting purposes that’s the only reason unless you see a military parade.

The substantive appointment of a member of staff refers to the job or position for which they have an entitlement or would normally occupy in the absence of any acting appointment.
