What is special about people with type O blood?

People with O blood type are daring, outgoing and go-getters. They have a habit of setting high standard for themselves and do all they can to achieve them. What are the three main functions of blood?

Blood Basics

  • transporting oxygen and nutrients to the lungs and tissues.
  • forming blood clots to prevent excess blood loss.
  • carrying cells and antibodies that fight infection.
  • bringing waste products to the kidneys and liver, which filter and clean the blood.
  • regulating body temperature.

What is the benefit of O positive blood group?

The risk of reaction is much lower in ongoing blood loss situations and O positive is more available than O negative. Type O positive blood is critical in trauma care. Those with O positive blood can only receive transfusions from O positive or O negative blood types.

People with type O+ blood can donate their blood to all 4 groups, but only to people with the RH positive subgroup (O+, A+, B+, AB+). Red cells of O- type can be transfused to all 8 subgroups, which makes it a universal blood type that is always needed for emergency transfusions.

Type O blood individuals can receive type O blood only. In emergency cases when type O- blood is in short supply, it can be substituted with type O+ blood.

Why is it important to know your blood group?

Knowing you belong to A, B, AB, or O-negative blood group (or positive) is important because it is vital for saving life many times. Blood group matching is important so that the transfused blood is not attacked by the immune system of the recipient.

Thus, blood group matching is done so that compatible blood (or tissue) is selected. There are four possible blood groups in the ABO system: AB, A, B and O. Blood group A individuals possess A antigen on their red cells and have naturally occurring antibodies (anti-B) in their serum that react with group B and AB people.
