What is soldering in plumbing?

Soldering is a technique used to join together two separate metals using another metal (or metal alloy) with a low melting point. Electrical solders have a lower melting point (around 360˚F), while solders used in plumbing have higher melting points, usually well over 400˚F.

Do plumbers braze or solder?

On the plumbing side, we tend to solder copper tube joints when using a torch. When looking for a stronger joint, brazing is one of the options. In addition to medical gas and refrigeration tubing, brazing is common in water piping and fuel gas piping, to name a few systems.

What does it mean to sweat pipes?

soldering
“Sweating pipes” is one term homeowners may hear when maintaining their pipes. Sweating a pipe refers to soldering a pipe or the joint. Sweating seals a new joint or mends a fault. Clean the end of the copper pipe with a cleaning brush until the surface is bright all around.

Can you solder with water in the line?

Don’t try to solder pipes with water in them. Soldering a joint in pipes that contain even tiny amounts of water is nearly impossible. Most of the heat from the torch goes into turning the water to steam, so the copper won’t get hot enough to melt the solder. Stop the trickle of water with a pipe plug.

What is silver soldering?

Silver soldering, also known as ‘hard’ soldering or silver brazing, is a process in which two or more parts are joined by melting and flowing filler metal into the joint. This is why a silver soldered joint is very much stronger than a soft soldered one, and sometimes stronger than the base materials joined.

What is floating in soldering?

This process, however, may be accompanied by various unwanted movements of components and solder. Components may move horizontally along the surface of the board (this is called swimming or floating), or may move vertically and stand on their ends (this is called drawbridging or Manhattan effect).

Why is it called a sweat fitting?

The walls of copper pipe, however, are too thin and soft to be threaded, so a different sort of fitting is used, called a sweat fitting. It’s called that because the process of joining the various elements using solder involves heating them with a propane torch until they seem to sweat.

Is brazing and soldering the same thing?

The American Welding Society (AWS) defines brazing as such a process which involves a filler metal which has a liquidus above 450°C (842°F). Soldering, on the other hand, involves filler metals with a liquidus of 450°C or below.

What is the difference between brazing and soldering process?

The only difference between brazing and soldering is the temperature at which each process takes place. Soldering takes place at a temperature below 840°F (450°C), and brazing occurs at a temperature above 840°F (450°C).

How do you solder copper pipe fittings?

In the soldering process, heat is applied to the copper joint where the pipe and fitting meet and the gap between the joint is filled with molten metal. This guide will help you identify the types of solder available, as well as the right flux for soldering your project.

How much solder do I need for a 1/2 pipe?

To prep the solder, follow these steps: Unwind the solder. Snip off as much as you need. Bend the amount of solder you want to use to a 90-degree angle. The amount of solder should be roughly equal to the diameter of the pipe. A 1/2-inch pipe needs about 1/2 inch of solder.

What is the difference between solder and welding?

Soldering ( AmE: / ˈsɒdərɪŋ /, BrE: / ˈsoʊldərɪŋ /) is a process in which two or more items are joined together by melting and putting a filler metal ( solder) into the joint, the filler metal having a lower melting point than the adjoining metal. Unlike welding, soldering does not involve melting the work pieces.

What is a lead-free plumbing solder?

Lead-free plumbing solders are required for use on pipes carrying drinking water, also known as potable water lines. Leaded solders are available for applications that will not come into contact with potable water, such as sheet metal repair or copper drain lines.
