What is probe loading?

Probing a circuit always has some impact on signals. Probe loading changes the signal being probed and can cause measurement problems or can even cause a circuit to perform differently. In this application note, you’ll learn how low capacitance probes can improve your measurements.

Why is a 10X probe used?

For most general-purpose use, 10X probes are preferred, both because of their high-end voltage range and because they cause less signal source loading. However, if you plan to measure a very wide range of voltage levels, you may want to consider a switchable 1X/10X probe.

What measurements can you make using a oscilloscope Mcq?

Cathode Ray Oscilloscope MCQ Question 5 Detailed Solution It is capable of generating a graph of an input signal versus time (Voltage-time mode), or a second variable (X-Y mode). It is used to measure: peak voltage, frequency or period, phase difference, pulse-width, delay time, rise time, etc.

How do you prevent the loading of a circuit under test when a CRO is used?

To minimise the loading effect of circuit under test, the input impedance of the device must:

  1. Be very high.
  2. Be capacitive.
  3. Be very low.
  4. Match with the input impedance of the circuit.

What is the difference between a 1X and 10X oscilloscope probe?

A 1X probe has no series resistor and 1 V at the probe tip produces 1 V at the scope. A 10X probe has 9M Ohm of series resistance. As a result 1 V applied at the probe tip becomes 0.1 V at the oscilliscope due to the voltage divider formed. It has less sensitivity but loads the circuit 1/10th as much.

How to calibrate the vertical (Y) channel accuracy of oscilloscopes?

Calibrating the vertical (Y) channel accuracy of oscilloscopes is usually performed with DC or low frequency squarewave signals. Bandwidth is generally tested with a high frequency sinewaves.

Can oscilloscopes measure high voltage levels?

I have used oscilloscopes to troubleshoot electronics problems and measure AC engine current spikes at startup, but I have no experience using them to measure high voltage levels and my experience is with old analog scopes. So now I have this new DSO and the input rating is 400V peak to peak AC, so it can handle about 140V AC RMS?

What is the source impedance of an oscilloscope calibrator?

By careful design, the source impedance of the oscilloscope calibrator can be made very close to a perfect 50W (low VSWR). However its value should be considered when assessing the impact of the load (scope input) VSWR. The impact of mis-match on signal level accuracy can be assessed by considering the VSWR of source and load.

Why does my oscilloscope display a reflection?

Excessive reflections may be an indication of poor VSWR caused by damage to the scope input, for example from an accidental overload during usage. The design of dedicated oscilloscope calibration solutions minimise the effect of impedance mismatches, but calibration technicians and metrologists should be aware of their impact:
