What is meant by cooling tower blowdown?

Blowdown: When water evaporates from the tower, dissolved solids (such as calcium, magnesium, chloride, and silica) remain in the recirculating water. The concentration of dissolved solids is controlled by removing a portion of the highly concentrated water and replacing it with fresh make-up water.

Why do cooling towers have a blowdown valve?

Blowdown is used to help avoid the over cycling of dissolved solids that would lead to deposition in your cooling system. Wasted Water – Too much blowdown forces the tower makeup water valve to open and add water to maintain the sump level.

Is cooling tower blowdown continuous?

Cooling towers, closed circuit coolers and evaporative condensers require continuous blow down or “bleed off” with added make-up water to maintain an acceptable concentration level.

How do you calculate the blowdown of a cooling tower?

It is calculated by this equation:

  1. Evaporation loss = 0.00085 Wc (T1-T2)
  2. Drift loss = 0.02\% water supply [for new development in eliminator design]
  3. Blowdown = [ Evaporative loss – (COC – 1) x Drift loss] /(COC – 1)

What is the meaning of TR in cooling tower?

Ton of Refrigeration
Ton of Refrigeration (TR): Ton of Refrigeration (abbreviated as TR) is an important historical unit of refrigeration capacity. Originally 1 TR was defined as the rate of heat transfer required to make 1 short ton (2000 lbs) of ice per day from water at 0oC.

What is COC chiller?

COC or the Cycles Of Concentration is an abbreviation, used when talking about cooling water or cooling tower water. The COC specifies, how often a fresh water added into the loop, can be used or pumped around, before the water has to blown down or bleed off from the cooling tower.

What is the purpose of blowdown?

The primary purpose of blowdown is to maintain the solids content of boiler water within certain limits. This may be required for specific reasons, such as contamination of the boiler water. In this case, a high blowdown rate is required to eliminate the contaminants as rapidly as possible.

What is COC cooling tower?

COC or the Cycles Of Concentration is an abbreviation, used when talking about cooling water or cooling tower water. The COC specifies, how often a fresh water added into the loop, can be used or pumped around, before the water has to blown down or bleed off from the cooling tower. PausePlay.

What is LG ratio in cooling tower?

The L/G ratio of a cooling tower is the ratio between the water and the air mass flow rates. Cooling towers have certain design values, but seasonal variations require adjustment and tuning of water and air flow rates to get the best cooling tower effectiveness.

What is drift losses in cooling tower?

Drift is water lost from cooling towers as liquid droplets are entrained in the exhaust air. The drift loss is independent of the water lost by evaporation and may be expressed in units of lb/hr or percentage of circulating water flow. Cooling tower drift eliminators are used to control this drift loss from the tower.

What is 1ton of refrigeration?

It is defined as the rate of heat transfer that results in the freezing or melting of 1 short ton (2,000 lb; 907 kg) of pure ice at 0 °C (32 °F) in 24 hours. …

How many BTU’s are in a ton?

12,000 Btu/
Rounding up 11,917 Btu/hr gives you 12,000 Btu/hr, which is one ton of air conditioner capacity. To determine how much heat must be removed to cool your home – your home’s cooling load – your HVAC contractor will follow the guidelines set forth in the ACCA’s (Air Conditioner Contractors of America) Manual J.
