What is hyperacusis like?
Hyperacusis makes everyday noises, like running water, seem excessively loud. The sensation may be uncomfortable or even painful. See a doctor if everyday sounds seem louder than usual. The doctor can examine your ear and use tests to evaluate your hearing.
How bad can hyperacusis get?
If you suffer from hyperacusis, you may experience very severe and debilitating symptoms, or you may experience mild and barely noticeable symptoms. Plenty of people who suffer from hearing sensitivity do not realise they have a medical condition and simply think they’ve got really good hearing.
Is hyperacusis good or bad?
Not very loud – and certainly not harmful. At least not to the normal ear, that is. But for people with hyperacusis, these everyday sounds can cause pain, frustration, and even terror. Children have been seen running away from specific sounds, that were distressing to them – but which are harmless to everybody else.
Is hyperacusis painful?
For people who experience pain, hyperacusis seems to come in spells. After being exposed to a new loud noise, you might find you have daily pain for days or weeks triggered by various noises. The pain might be a dull headache, burning, throbbing or a sharp stab.

White noise is a random flat noise and sounds just like a radio when out of tune. They can be used as a form of sound therapy to reduce the sensitivity in the auditory system. You may be more aware of hyperacusis in one ear, however, ideally you should wear white noise generators in both ears.

Diplacusis caused by sensorineural hearing loss is permanent, but it may be treated with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Auditory rehabilitation and/or auditory training can also help your brain adapt.
Does hyperacusis go away?
In most cases when hyperacusis goes away it is as a result of treatment. Sound therapy is often used along with cognitive behavioural therapy and other support. Sound therapy usually consists of earpieces which play white noise. This retrains the brain to reduce the trigger threshold for sound. This can make the condition better.
Can hyperacusis make tinnitus worse?
