What is graphite casting?

Graphite Permanent Molding is a niche process used for casting zinc-aluminum alloy parts. Parts can be cast with higher accuracy than sand processes. The Graphite Process produces castings with a surface finish better than 125 RMS.

Why is casting titanium difficult?

Unfortunately, titanium is an inherently difficult metal to cast, mainly due to its relatively high melting point … 1,670+50 C†, along with its active interaction with various gases, and the extreme reactions that occur between titanium and investment materials [3].

What is titanium investment casting?

Titanium Investment Casting Titanium investment casting is the manufacturing process that produces parts through the metallic replication of wax models. The resulting titanium parts have a very smooth finish that requires little finishing after the process.

What are graphite molds made of?

Most molds are fabricated from isostatically pressed graphite, however extruded graphite is also used for vertical casting of large ingots. Some alloys that are used for manufacturing continous casting in graphite molds re grey cast irons, white cast irons, aluminum bronzes, oxygen-free copper, etc.

How long do graphite molds last?

8-120 hrs.
Graphite molds lifetime Depending on the work conditions and the alloy type graphite mold may operate continuously for 8-120 hrs. After each casting run the mold may be repaired by machining the work surfaces.

Can you Mould titanium?

As indicated by its negative redox potential, titanium is thermodynamically a very reactive metal that burns in normal atmosphere at lower temperatures than the melting point. Melting is possible only in an inert atmosphere or in a vacuum. At 550 °C (1,022 °F), it combines with chlorine.

Can titanium be sand casted?

Conventional materials such as sand, shell, or ceramic molds are unsatisfactory for titanium since titanium above or near its melting point will violently react with these materials.

How many times can a graphite mold be used?

By simultaneously controlling fill rate, cycle time, and temperature with a process controller, these machines maximize the density and minimize the porosity of the castings, yielding ZA-12 parts of exceptional quality and repeatability. Under the right conditions, a graphite mold can cast as many as 40,000 parts.

What are ingot molds made of?

Ingot molds are typically made from metals such as cast iron, ductile iron, steel or aluminum. Ingot molds are used for casting refined metal such as aluminum, copper, lead and zinc into various shapes and sizes for future processing.

Can you invest titanium cast?

Investment cast titanium achieves an ideal middle ground for most aerospace, defense, and subsea applications. Investment casting produces reasonably fine detail and tolerances at a reasonable cost.
