In policy debate, Lincoln-Douglas debate, and public forum debate, the flow (flowing in verb form) is the name given to a specialized form of notetaking or shorthand, which debaters use to keep track of all of the arguments in the round.

What is the order of policy debate?

You can think of policy debate rounds as being split into 2 sections: the first four are constructive speeches and and the last four are rebuttal speeches. Each debater will give one of each type of speech. Constructive speeches are 8 minutes, whereas rebuttal speeches are only 5.

Flowing is an important way to keep track of what’s going on in the debate. This is absolutely crucial to make sure that you answer the arguments that need to be answered and keep up with what your opponents dropped.

Very simply put, a framework in academic debate is the set of standards the judge will use to evaluate a case. It is the judge’s duty to listen to both sides of the debate and determine a winner. If neither debater provides a standard, the judge will try to evaluate things such as the source or timeliness of the data.

How can I win the PF debate?

Speaking well and confidently is among the most important things you can do to win over a traditional (“lay” or “flay”) judge. This consists of modulating your tone, making eye contact, minimizing stuttering and/or fluency breaks, and using a mix of ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade your judge.

What is flowing and how do I use it?

Flowing is simply just a way to take notes and keep track of the debate. And it’s not “peaceful island dream” kind of note-taking. It can actually be pretty stressful when your opponents speak at 1000 miles per hour. Flowing is an important way to keep track of what’s going on in the debate.

How does the negative team win a debate?

Usually, the negative team only needs to win one of their arguments to win the debate. The negative team will also give voters in this speech. Voters are stating what arguments they won, why those arguments are important, and reasons why they won the round.
