What is direct solar irradiance?

Direct irradiance is the part of the solar irradiance that directly reaches a surface; diffuse irradiance is the part that is scattered by the atmosphere; global irradiance is the sum of both diffuse and direct components reaching the same surface.

What is the unit of solar irradiance?

Units. The SI unit of irradiance is watt per square metre (W/m2 = Wm−2). An alternative unit of measure is the Langley (1 thermochemical calorie per square centimeter or 41,840 J/m2) per unit time. The solar energy industry uses watt-hour per square metre (Wh/m2) per unit time.

What is the value of mean solar irradiance on Earth?

approximately 1000 W/m2
Above the earth’s atmosphere, solar radiation has an intensity of approximately 1380 watts per square meter (W/m2). This value is known as the Solar Constant. At our latitude, the value at the surface is approximately 1000 W/m2 on a clear day at solar noon in the summer months.

What is GHI and GTI?

Global Horizontal Irradiation/Irradiance (GHI) is the sum of direct and diffuse radiation received on a horizontal plane. Global Tilted Irradiation/Irradiance (GTI), or total radiation received on a surface with defined tilt and azimuth, fixed or sun-tracking.

What is direct normal irradiance?

Direct Normal Irradiation (DNI) is the amount of solar radiation received per unit area by a surface that is always held perpendicular (or normal) to the rays that come in a straight line from the direction of the sun at its current position in the sky.

What is the value of irradiance?

Irradiance is a measurement of solar power and is defined as the rate at which solar energy falls onto a surface. The unit of power is the Watt (abbreviated W). In the case of solar irradiance, we usually measure the power per unit area, so irradiance is typically quoted as W/m², that is, Watts per square meter.

What causes solar irradiance?

The angle of the sun determines solar irradiance. The greater the angle, the lower the solar intensity. The lower the angle of the sun, the larger amount of ozone the light has to pass through 9. This is also factor in ultraviolet irradiance.

What is DNI and Dhi?

Both DHI & DNI are actually components of GHI and mathematically, Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) = Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI)* cos(solar zenith angle) + Diffused Horizontal Irradiance (DHI) GTI is acronym for Global Tilted Irradiance which represents irradiation that falls on a tilted surface.

What is GHI units?

Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI), from the hemisphere above a horizontal plane surface, is a combination of DNI, corrected for the angle of incidence of the beam (θ), and Diffuse Horizontal Irradiance (DHI). GHI = DNI*cosθ + DHI. All these parameters are measured in units of W/m2.

What is the difference between total and direct normal solar irradiance?

Total solar irradiance measures solar power at all wavelengths per unit area incident in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. 2.- Direct Normal Irradiance It is measured on the Earth’s surface at a given location with a surface element perpendicular to the Sun’s rays. This type of irradiation excludes diffuse solar radiation.

What units is solar irradiation measured in?

In the international system of units, it is measured in (W/m 2 ). Solar irradiation is the quantity that measures the energy per unit area of incident solar radiation on a surface – the power received during a time (J/m 2 or Wh/m 2 ). The term solar radiation is a generic concept, but it is not quantified to any magnitude.

What are the different types of solar irradiance?

There are several types of solar irradiance. 1.- Total Solar Irradiance Total solar irradiance measures solar power at all wavelengths per unit area incident in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. 2.- Direct Normal Irradiance

What is the normal surface irradiance of the Sun at sea level?

The Sun’s rays are attenuated as they pass through the atmosphere, leaving maximum normal surface irradiance at approximately 1000 W /m 2 at sea level on a clear day. When 1361 W/m 2 is arriving above the atmosphere (when the sun is at the zenith in a cloudless sky), direct sun is about 1050 W/m 2,…
