In general, there are two main levels of politeness split into 존댓말 (jondaemal), which is the polite form and 반말 (banmal), which is the more casual form.

Jondaemal is polite speech or formal speech (Jondae means “honorific,” while “mal” is the suffix for “speech”). Banmal is informal or familiar speech, and the literal word can be translated as “half” and “speech”.

Banmal / 반말 – Informal way of speaking with others in Korean. You use this form of speech with close friends or people younger than you. Jondaemal / 존댓말 – Is a formal way of speaking. You use this form of speech to strangers and people who are older than you or in formal situations like meetings.

What does Banmal mean?

Banmal is informal or familiar speech, and the literal word can be translated as: “half” and “word/speech.” It’s half-speak, or jondae cut in half. It’s not so much the volume of words that’s cut, although banmal does require fewer words to convey meaning.

However, even with ①, the younger can’t say in complete banmal but with some restrictions. While the elders can use words like “ya (야: calling someone)”, and a speech level haera-che (해라체), the youngers can’t but just can speak in hae-che (해체).
