What is assessment history?

History Assessments of Thinking (HATs) ask students to go beyond factual recall to apply information in a specific historical context. Assessments are designed as formative assessments of a student’s acquisition of the Historical Thinking Skills embedded in the Reading Like a Historian program.

Why do we assess in history?

They are required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of that history. This is the core of the examination – that the prospective teachers demonstrate that are able to work with “both” the history skills and the content to demonstrate how they will teach in this way in the future.

How should students evaluate historians’ arguments?

  1. Begin by identifying the author’s particular viewpoint.
  2. Be on the lookout for ‘views within views’.
  3. Form an opinion on the historian’s argument by applying what you already know about the topic.
  4. Never be afraid to question the historian’s arguments.

What questions should be asked during a health history assessment?

If the patient has any of these complaints during a health history assessment, you want to make sure you ask the patient the location, quality, onset, duration, frequency, and severity of each symptom (Lippincott and Wilkins, 2010). Be sure to ask about past medical history, include questions such as: “Do have an ulcer?”
