What is a nonlinear static analysis?

Nonlinear static analysis, commonly referred to as pushover analysis, is a method for determining the ultimate load and deflection capability of a structure.

What is difference between linear and non-linear analysis?

A linear analysis mainly requires linear elastic material and small displacements (infinitesimal strain theory), while a non-linear analysis considers large displacements and elastoplastic materials, therefore the superposition effect cannot be applied. Another important difference is the stiffness matrix.

What is meant by non-linear static stress?

A nonlinear static analysis is required for any static application in which the stiffness of the entire structure changes during the loading scenario. The simulation must be solved incrementally to account for the stiffness changes. Changes in physical contacts allow stress transfer between structural components.

What is non-linear static pushover analysis?

In non-linear static analysis or pushover analysis, a building under constant gravity loads and monotonically increasing lateral forces during a seismic event is analyzed until a target displacement is reached.

Why do we do non-linear analysis?

As already discussed, nonlinear analysis becomes necessary when the stiffness of the part changes under its operating conditions. If changes in stiffness come only from changes in shape, nonlinear behavior is defined as geometric nonlinearity.

A numerical example of a curved cantilever beam under lateral loads indicates the effectiveness of the proposed method in cases with three-dimensional finite rotations.

Pushover analysis is commonly used to evaluate the seismic capacity of existing structures and appears in several recent guidelines for retrofit seismic design. It can also be useful for performance-based design of new buildings that rely on ductility or redundancies to resist earthquake forces.

Material non-linearities occur in solid mechanics when the relationship between stress and strain, otherwise known as the constitutive relationship of the material, is no longer linear. The direct proportionality of stress and strain can no longer be assumed, as it is in the simple linear elastic case.
