What is a fused aromatic ring?

[¦fyüzd ar·ə¦mad·ik ′riŋ] (organic chemistry) A molecular structure in which two or more aromatic rings have two carbon atoms in common.

How do benzene rings work?

The usual structural representation for benzene is a six carbon ring (represented by a hexagon) which includes three double bonds. In benzene itself, these atoms are hydrogens. The double bonds are separated by single bonds so we recognize the arrangement as involving conjugated double bonds.

What is special about a benzene ring?

It is also the parent compound for numerous other aromatic compounds. But its most interesting feature is its characteristic hexagon ring-like structure of six carbon atoms with associated hydrogen bonds at regular intervals. This structure helps to make the molecule incredibly stable.

Are two benzene rings together aromatic?

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Naphthalene consists of two benzene rings that are fused together; the resulting molecule is still aromatic, and undergoes the reactions that are typical of benzene itself.

What are fused rings?

Two rings that have only two atoms and one bond in common are said to be ortho-fused. Any atom of a fused ring system which is common to two or more rings is termed a fusion atom.

What is activated benzene ring?

Activated rings: the substituents on the ring are groups that donate electrons. Deactivated rings: the substituents on the ring are groups that withdraw electrons.

How do you open a benzene ring?

Nature has also found ways to split apart aromatic rings: benzene can be broken open by dioxygenase enzymes under biological conditions, to produce a compound called muconic acid3 (Fig. 1b).

What is the difference between benzene and benzine?

Benzene and benzine are not the same thing. Though they are often confused or used interchangeably in books and magazines, they are very different. Benzene is spelled with an “e” as in dead. Benzine is spelled with an “i” as in alive.

What is an benzene ring in chemistry?

Benzene ring: An aromatic functional group characterized by a ring of six carbon atoms, bonded by alternating single and double bonds. A benzene ring with a single substituent is called a phenyl group (Ph).

What is benzine used for?

Benzine is used for cleaning surfaces and removing oil stains from clothes, as well as cleaning rubber surface before gluing. In order to make a solution for washing clothes, add up to 10\% of benzine to the suds.

Why do you think benzene and other benzene derived compounds are termed as aromatic compounds?

The term aromatic was originally used to classify benzene and its derivatives because many of them have distinctive odors. It became clear, however, that a sounder classification for these compounds would be one based on structure and chemical reactivity, not aroma. Benzene is the parent arene.
