What is 20W50 used for?

20W-50 is a common motor oil used in moderate-to-large diesel and gasoline engines, high-performance motorcycle bikes, and aviation vehicles. Its resistance to thinning at high heat also makes it popular as a racing oil and high temperature driving.

Is 20W50 good for petrol engine?

Virtually every mechanic recommends the use of 20w50. 20W-50 engine oil is no good for modern engines, regardless of the mileage. It is too thick, and flow to sensitive areas like multivalve cylinders, VVT / VANOS and any other timing adjusters that rely on instant oil pressure will be impeded.

Is 20W50 good for high mileage?

The viscosity level of engine oil 20W50 is geared toward racing engines, as opposed to high-mileage engines, that run extremely hot and need heavy load operation. The thickness is not meant for daily, older vehicle use.

What is the thickest car oil?

60 is the thickest oil in general use, but there are racing grades that go to 70. Most lubricating oils are now multigrade. There are now some additions to the table for very low viscosity, and these go in increments of 4 (4, 8, 12, 16) to distinguish from the 5 increment Winter grades.

What oil is the thickest?

Which oil is thicker when hot?

10W30 and 10W40 engine oils are very similar. While both are low-temperature grade oils, 10W40 is thicker at high temperature; therefore, better to use in warm weather. This article provides tips for using SAE 10W-30 and 10W-40 and covers viscosity grades.

Is diesel oil good for motorcycles?

Diesels oils are as close as you can get to motorcycle oil. They DO NOT contain friction modifiers that will harm your clutch. Those are in “energy conserving” oils.

Why use 20w50 motor oil?

It is also useful for vehicles subject to hot temperatures and for those used for high-stress activities such as hauling or pulling trailers. 20W50 motor oil is a high viscosity oil that provides a cushioning and protects against metal-to-metal contact. It is also a more effective sealant than thinner oils.

What are the benefits of using 20w50 motor oil?

Helps reduce engine wear and corrosion

  • Helps keep engine clean
  • Multigrade motor oil allowing easier starts at low temperatures
  • Good high temperature properties
  • What does 20W 50 mean?

What the Numbers Mean. The numbers 20W50 refer to the viscosity of the motor oil, set by the Society of American Engineers. This refers to its fluidity or thickness. The “20W” indicates how quickly the engine will start when cold or in cold weather. The “50” refers to the thickness of the oil when the motor has been running for a while.

    What does 20w50 oil mean?

20W50 motor oil is a high viscosity oil that provides a cushioning and protects against metal-to-metal contact.
