What happens when a Valkyrie dies?

Selecting among half of those who die in battle (the other half go to the goddess Freyja’s afterlife field Fólkvangr), the valkyries take their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar (Old Norse “single (or once) fighters”).

Why did Odin curse the Valkyries?

This curse was later revealed to having been cast by Odin, out of spite after Freya lost her position as the queen- her stand-in, Sigrun, states that no matter what she did, it was ‘not enough’ for the Allfather. The curse forces the Valkyries to remain in a physical form, which is an unnatural state to Valkyries.

Are the Valkyries gods?

The Valkyrie (Old Norse; singular Valkyrja [ˈwɑlˌkyrjɑ], plural Valkyrjur “Choosers of the Slain”) were female servants of the god Óðinn who brought those who were doomed to die in battle to Óðinn’s hall Valhǫll in Ásgarðr.

Are Valkyries women warriors?

This martial ideology of which valkyries are a part also seeped into daily life. A typical valkyrie name, like Hild, means ‘battle’, and many ordinary women in the Viking Age also bore names (Iike the very common Gunnhild, or ‘War-battle’) that contained such elements. Yet that did not make them women warriors.

Did women fight as warriors in the Viking Age?

But there is absolutely no hard evidence that women trained or served as regular warriors in the Viking Age. Valkyries were an object of the imagination, creatures of fantasy rooted in the experience of male warriors. War was certainly a part of Viking life, but women warriors must be classed as Viking legend.

Even the beloved god Baldr, son or Odin, found himself in Helheim (and not Valhalla) when he was killed in a prank orchestrated by Loki. Not even Odin, king of the Norse gods, could bring him back from the dead, only Hel, the Norse goddess of the underworld, could bestow this gift.
