What happens when a bee larva is fed royal jelly?

Honeybee larvae develop into queen bees only when they are fed large quantities of a food known as royal jelly. While other larvae are fed small amounts of food jelly directly, the worker bees stuff it into the queen cell in vast quantities, building up a sticky mass that both feeds the larva and keeps her in place.

Are all bee larvae fed royal jelly?

Early on, all bee larvae are fed a substance called royal jelly, which is a gelatinous substance produced in the head glands of ‘nurse’ bees. In contrast, those larvae chosen to become queens are fed only royal jelly for the remainder of their lives.

What happens when a female bee hatches but is not fed the royal jelly?

Nurse bees mash this into a “worker jelly” and add glandular secretions as a garnish. Workers don’t get the special stuff in queen jelly, and their ovaries shrivel. That’s the conventional explanation.

What is the lifespan of queen bee?

Queens live on average 1–2 years (Page and Peng 2001), although a maximum lifespan of 8 years was reported in one study (Bozina 1961). The dimorphism observed in the honey bee female caste is particularly interesting because workers and queens have the same genotype yet exhibit a 10-fold difference in lifespan.
